    Job Responsibilities

    This is a PRN Surgical Technician position.  In this position, you'll be assisting with out-patient pain management procedures on a per diem basis.  We perform these procedures any day, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm.


    The Surgical Technician performs a variety of duties in the Operating Room to assist the surgical team.


    Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Prepares for scheduled operative procedures, assuring that necessary equipment, instruments and supplies (including any indicated on physician’s preference/plan of care are available and ready for use).
    • Assists in the transportation of patients to and from the operating room verify patient’s identify and assists with transfer and positioning of patient for surgical procedures.
    • Scrubs a variety of operative procedures, handles surgical instruments, sutures, and sponges, and anticipates the needs of the surgeon and assists him/her as directed.
    • Maintains an accurate count of sponges, needles, and instruments, and jointly responsible with circulating registered nurses for ensuring that all are accounted for during and after operation.
    • Maintains strict aseptic techniques; identifies, corrects and breaks in techniques.
    • Observes patient’s condition while in the Operating Room, reports any changes to the RN and/or Anesthesia.
    • Maintains a clean and safe operating room environment; cleans rooms and sterilizes equipment. Restocks Operating Room with standard supplies.
    • Maintains instrument sets within assigned specialty area.
    • Assists and maintains the inventory supplies for the department.
    • Facilitates obtaining surgical instrumentation, special equipment and supplies for all scheduled cases
    • Performs the functions of the central sterile processing
    • Performs the required CQI for the central sterile processing
    • Prepares materials to be presented in department in-service education as assigned.
    • Assists in the trial and evaluation of new surgical products.
    • Provides input in developing new policies and procedures for the department.
    • Orients new Surgical Technicians and Registered Nurses to scrub responsibilities.
    • Participates in interdisciplinary CQI activities.
    • Attends mandatory and non-mandatory in-services as required, including age specific training.
    • Maintains skill checklists/competencies.
    • Attends unit staff meetings according to policy.
    • Maintains AHA BLS certification.
    • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with nursing and medical staff in stressful situations.
    • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, visitors, nursing and medical staff, and hospital personnel.
    • Manual dexterity and visual acuity for passing instruments, cutting sutures, holding retractors, etc.



    Position Requirements

    • High School Diploma or equivalent experience required; One year certificate from college or technical school required; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Maintains AHA BLS certification required.
    • Certification in Surgical Technology preferred.
    • Basic computer/data entry skills preferred.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively in one-on-one situations with customers or employees of the organization. Ability to demonstrate empathy and sensitivity in all patient contact situations. Completes all assignments in a patient-focused manner. Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with clients, patients, family members, Medical and Nursing staff, and all BCC personnel.
    • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide in 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement and volume.
    • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Physical Requirements:

    • The employee may be exposed to radioactive isotopes, ionizing radiation, and a strong magnetic field. May be exposed to radiation, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
    • More than 50% of the time:
      • Sit, stand, walk.
      • Repetitive movement of hands, arms and legs.
      • See, speak and hear to be able to communicate with patients.
    • Less than 50% of the time:
      • Stoop, kneel or crawl.
      • Climb and balance.
      • Carry and lift (ability to move non-ambulatory patients from a sitting or lying position for transfer or to exam).
